DIRECTOR OF SAFETY | WILMINGTON, DE

Leads the design, development, and implementation of programs and policies that provide and maintain healthful and safe working conditions within all Sentinel environments, and assists in maintaining compliance with environmental health and safety guidelines/regulations and other legal enactments and standards.  Manages and oversees all claims activity for the organization interacting with outside adjusters and counsel as needed.  Has advanced and specialized expertise, typically developed through a combination of job-related training and considerable on-the-job experience.  Provides advice on safety, protection, and performs audits to ensure that organization and government standards on environmental health and safety are met.

 

  

primary responsibilities

 

  • Supports the Chief Legal & Safety Officer in the development, execution, and monitoring of policies, procedures, and programs related to environmental health and safety, risk management, and regulatory compliance throughout Sentinel.
  •  Represents the Chief Legal & Safety Officer in communicating the required structure, staffing, and systems within the Safety, Environmental, and Regulatory organization, and works with Regional Safety Managers in monitoring progress against targeted environmental health and safety goals and compliance levels to all regulatory standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Provides guidance and support to the Operations in the execution of all activities related to safety and environmental goals, risk management activities, and regulatory compliance standards within field operations.
  • Oversees all activities related to potential risks and exposures in policies, procedures, programs, permits, and licenses.  This also includes the oversight of all activities related to spills and spill clean ups, contractor activity, and regulatory reporting.
  • Manages the Responsible Care Certification process, and oversees all activities related to the responsible care management system.
  • Oversees the development and distribution of all monthly material for Safety Meetings and Safety Flash Reports.  Works closely with the Chief Legal & Safety Officer to develop materials and implement training related to the Safety, Environmental, and Regulatory organization.
  • Works closely with the Fleet Management group to ensure appropriate analysis of equipment as it relates to safety, chemical exposures, and delivery processes.
  • Manages all claim and incident investigation for the organization including initial incident calls, incident investigation, interaction with our outside nurse case management providers and managing our outside claims teams. Also develops guidelines for Sentinel's Workers' Compensation program and ensures proper implementation throughout the company.  Drives appropriate resolution of all claims.
  • Assumes responsibilities for all special projects assigned by the Chief Legal & Safety Officer, including the identification of emerging trends related to the Safety, Environmental, and Regulatory organization, building upon his/her expertise, technical knowledge, and experience in the industry.

requirements

 

  • Bachelor's Degree required, with a concentration in Safety Management, Safety Engineering, Occupational Environment Health, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Physical Sciences, Industrial Safety Management or related field. 
  • Master's degree strongly preferred.
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designations a plus.
  • Minimum of 15 years working experience in the area of safety, compliance, and/or risk management within a comparable industry, with 5 of those years in a leadership position.
  • Significant level of knowledge of FMCSA, DOT, PHMSA and other regulations related to the transportation of chemicals and petroleum products
  •  Strong proven Leadership Skills for both direct reports and indirect reports, including the ability to lead and interact effectively with operations management and front line management.
  • Significant level of knowledge of FHWA/HM regulations, policies and procedures
  • Proficiency and experience in truck on-board safety and data collection technology including in-cab camera systems, ELD, data management such as People Net and all Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to communicate with individuals and groups in a range of settings, using a mix of verbal and written communication styles.
